According to reports, the functionalized bio-based itaconate-butadiene rubber is an original synthetic rubber variety in China. The Advanced Elastomer Materials Research Center of Beijing University of Chemical Technology carried out related work in 2008. It is a key project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Ministry of Science and Technology. Through molecular structure innovation, based on bio-based itaconate and butadiene monomers, the team of professors from Beijing University of Chemical Technology successfully synthesized a new generation of high-performance functionalization targeted at large-scale engineering applications by copolymerization and functional modification. Bio-based itaconate-butadiene rubber can realize the high value-added utilization of biomass resources and promote the green and sustainable development of the rubber industry.
The R&D team established the relationship between the structure and properties of the bio-based rubber chain, including the structure of the itaconate monomer, the structure of the diene monomer, the third functional monomer, and the polymerization process; and developed the functionalized bio-based itaconate- Free radical emulsion copolymerization technology of butadiene rubber, including initiator and emulsifier system, and compatible low-temperature emulsion polymerization process.
Relevant experts said that rubber plays an irreplaceable important role in our daily lives. China consumes nearly 10 million tons of rubber each year, of which synthetic rubber is about 5 million tons. However, China's natural rubber production is insufficient, with imports exceeding 80%; synthetic rubber relies on petrochemical resources, and many high-performance synthetic rubbers are mainly imported from abroad.
The design and development of new bio-based rubber is of great significance for improving China's right to speak in the rubber field and ensuring the high quality and sustainable development of China's rubber industry. According to estimates, the production of functionalized bio-based itaconate-butadiene rubber per ton of functionalized bio-based itaconate-butadiene rubber can reduce carbon emissions by 1.44 tons compared to traditional petroleum-based synthetic rubber, which can provide positive results for China’s "carbon peak" and "carbon neutral" strategy. support.
